Only 1 in 5 Americans Get Enough Exercise: CDC

Picture brighter for aerobic exercise than for muscle-strengthening, report finds.

THURSDAY, May 2 (HealthDay News) — Most Americans are falling short when it comes to exercise, a new government report shows.  Overall, only 20 percent of U.S. adults get the recommended amounts of both of aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The news was less disappointing for aerobic exercise, with 51.6 percent of adults getting the recommended amount, than it was for muscle-strengthening activities, with only 29.3 percent getting the recommended amount. The overall exercise rates also varied widely by state, ranging from 13 percent in Tennessee and West Virginia to 27 percent in Colorado.

The researchers put a positive spin on the results.

“While only about 30 percent of adults meet the muscle-strengthening guidelines, we find it very encouraging that half of U.S. adults are meeting the aerobic guidelines,” said report author Carmen Harris, a CDC epidemiologist.

The report was published in the May 3 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a CDC publication.

One expert also thinks the findings are good news.

“It is great that more people are participating in regular exercise,” said exercise physiologist Samantha Heller. Continue reading “Only 1 in 5 Americans Get Enough Exercise: CDC”

330 docking stations will open in Brooklyn and Manhattan, to be filled with 6,000 share bicycles.

Bad News For Obese Riders

The bikes carry a limit of 260 pounds, and anyone who exceeds that amount, cannot use the program.  ABC News reports on this story, ‘NYC Bike-Share Program Bans Obese Riders.’ and the New York Daily News, ‘Bike-Share Ban.’

Convenient and Inexpensive Transportation

Citi Bike is New York City’s next public transportation system, that will provide convenient and inexpensive mobility 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

The DOT has built 200 bike lane miles in all five boroughs, and commuter cycling has more than doubled in New York City since 2005.

Soda Wars

Soda Wars: New York Vs. Mississippi

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s controversial ban on large soda was overturned on March 11, by Justice Milton Tingling of State Supreme Court in Manhattan.

The judge said the ban was arbitrary and capricious, with too many loopholes and exemptions, because it applied to some but not all food establishments, and to some sweetened drinks, but not others.  Read more in the March 13, 2013 issue of the New York Daily News. Continue reading “Soda Wars”

Pediatricians Endorse Cell Phone Safety Legislation

On December 13, 2012, the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP)  announced its endorsement of H.R. 6358, the Cell Phone Right To Know Act.

orbisCorporation

H.R. 6358, introduced by Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), is a bill to grant a consumer’s right-to-know, by providing for warning labels on cell phones.

The bill would create a new national research program to study cell phones and health, and would require the Environmental Protection Agency to update the outdated Specific Absorption Rate (SAR).  The current standards are 16 years old.

In 2011 the World Health Organization concluded that there was sufficient evidence to classify cell phones as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

Because of the differences in bone density, children are more vulnerable to cell phone radiation than adults, and are subject to absorbing higher levels deeper into their brain.

Florida City Issues Warning About Cell Phones and Cancer

In an effort to raise awareness, and protect public health, the city of Pembroke Pines, Florida recently passed a unanimous resolution to warn its residents that cell phone radiation may be dangerous, and linked to cancer.

The resolution was inspired by Jimmy Gonzalez, a Pembroke Pines resident, who had brain tumors removed from the same region he uses his cell phone, just above his left ear, and his left hand.

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission), responsible for establishing cell phone safety standards, is long overdue in reassessing the limits on cell phone radiation.  The current standards are 16 years old.

A warning to the wise: even if you’re sceptical, take precaution when using your cell phone. Better safe, than sorry.  Some types of brain tumors are fatal.

Body Building At 93

Dr. Charles Eugster, a British dentist decided to take control of his aging process.  At 87, he hired a personal trainer, and learned how to improve his health through strength training.

Anyone can do this.  The doctor said so himself.  And it’s true, because it’s never too late.  Dr. Eugster has set an example for people over 50.

He took the time to improve his health and appearance and became a positive role model, for people of his generation, which, for the most part, are in bad shape.

Dr. Eugster hasn’t done anything amazing.  His actions are amazing, because he is so different than most people. Taking control of his health at an advanced age is highly commendable.
