Compassionate Cuisine: Thanksgiving Without Turkey

Trader Joe’s Meatless Turkey

Thanksgiving without the turkey doesn’t mean you’ll feel deprived.  Instead of focusing on the meat, you’ll be consuming more fruits, hearty vegetables, lean protein, and delicious sauces without animal fat.

Enjoying a vegetarian Thanksgiving Holiday meal boosts your fiber intake.

Serving creative vegetable dishes like Maple Roasted Brussel Sprouts, and Portobello Mushrooms with Savory Lentil-Cashew Stuffing, Streusel Topped Pumpkin Pie, Sourdough Stuffed Winter Squash,  Avocado and Grapefruit Salad, Chestnut and Apple Casserole, is just as mouth-watering, if not more so, than an animal-based holiday meal. Emergency Kitchen Tool: The Rotary Egg Beater

The Rotary Egg Beater, was a staple kitchen tool, until the electric beater came along.  Hand powered kitchen tools gave your arm, shoulder and fingers a workout. Now, all you need to do is hold an electric beater in your hand while it does all the work.  Or you can watch a blender, crush, mix and frappe without much effort on your part.

Good Old Fashioned
Rotary Egg Beater

Before the advent of electric kitchen appliances, everyone used kitchen tools that were powered by elbow grease.

Electrically powered blenders, food processors, peelers, mixers, make food preparation fast and easy.

Hand powered kitchen tools provide exercise for your wrists, fingers, and arms. Continue reading “Emergency Kitchen Tool: The Rotary Egg Beater”

Eating Healthy During Weather Disasters

Weather disasters are emotionally and physically taxing.

Imagine finding yourself in a blackout, having to do without modern conveniences.  Your stove doesn’t work, you have no lights, and in a few days all your food will go bad.

The local food markets are closed due to drastic weather conditions. Without power, perishable food in your refrigerator will spoil.

You don’t know how long the power outage will last. Your car is lost in a flood. What should you do?

Prepare for future emergencies by stocking up on non-perishable food.

NON-PERISHABLE FOOD

Apple Pie Without Added Sugar Recipe

In your quest to reduce, or eliminate added cane sugar, you’ve probably found out how difficult it, is to avoid buying packaged food that isn’t sweetened.  The same is true for recipes.  Here’s one I found at allrecipes.com, for No Sugar Apple Pie.

INGREDIENTS

Halloween Candy Isn’t A Treat

Candy is loaded with sugar, empty calories,* and preservatives.  Don’t use Halloween, or any other holiday, for that matter, to stuff your mouth with unhealthy food that isn’t necessary for human health. Sugary food gives you a rush of energy, and then lets you down, so you’ll go looking for more.

If you have kids, or expect kids to come to your door on October 31, give them something else.  Kids don’t need candy.  It ruins their teeth, and makes them fat.

On Halloween give out non-food treats like this:

  • Stickers
  • Miniature toys
  • Bubbles
  • Small games
  • Masks
  • Plastic rings
  • Shiny new pennies or nickels
  • Whistles
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils
