Eating Healthy During Weather Disasters

Weather disasters are emotionally and physically taxing.

Imagine finding yourself in a blackout, having to do without modern conveniences.  Your stove doesn’t work, you have no lights, and in a few days all your food will go bad.

The local food markets are closed due to drastic weather conditions. Without power, perishable food in your refrigerator will spoil.

You don’t know how long the power outage will last. Your car is lost in a flood. What should you do?

Prepare for future emergencies by stocking up on non-perishable food.

  • Non-perishable food doesn’t need refrigeration.
  • Non-perishable food provides high quality nourishment.
  • Non-perishable food is an excellent source of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals.

NUTS & SEEDS: Peanuts, Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Walnuts, Pecans, Pine Nuts, pistachios, Cashews, Macadamia, Hazelnuts, Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds

Nuts and seeds are sold raw, and roasted.  They are available in packages or bulk.  Organic raw nuts and seeds will cost more than conventional toasted varieties.  Buy nuts and seeds shelled.

DRIED FRUIT: Apricots, Pears, Apples, Raisins, Shredded or Flaked Coconut, Prunes, Figs, Papaya, Dates, Cranberries, Pineapple, Cherries, Blueberries, Bananas, Nectarines, Raspberries, Cantaloupe, Plums.

Dried fruit is sold in bulk, or in packages.  They are available in organic or conventional.

NUT BUTTERS: The most readily available are Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, and Cashew Butter.  While many health food stores carry other varieties of nut and seed butter, generally they are more difficult to find, and are more expensive.

CANNED VEGETABLES AND FRUIT: Select brands that don’t contain added sugar.

WHOLE GRAIN READY-TO-EAT CEREALS: Granola, Buckwheat-Hemp-Flax Flakes, Corn Flakes,  Millet-Rice Flakes, Millet Puffs.

For a quick meal, combine ready-to-eat cereal with milk and dry fruit, or eat it as a snack.

DRY MILK:  While powdered milk doesn’t taste like fresh milk, it provides protein.  Add it to your whole grain cereal, or make a chocolate or carob shake from it.

PACKAGED VEGAN MILK: Soy, Hemp, Almond, Oat.

POWDERED CHOCOLATE AND POWDERED CAROB: For quick shakes right out of the box try mixing chocolate, or carob powder with powdered milk, or packaged vegan milk such as hemp, soy, almond, or oat.  Unopened packaged vegan milk doesn’t need refrigeration.

KITCHEN GADGETS: Hand-cranked, or battery powered.

If you don’t prepare in advance, you may wind up eating food that will not sustain your energy during a crisis. Preparing in advance is especially important if you have children.  Weather disasters are emotionally and physically taxing.  Nourishing your body during a crisis gives you the strength to carry on, and get through it.
