Heart Attack Grill is the name of a controversial restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada, specializing in high calorie food, rich in saturated fat. One of the top menu choices is the 8,000 calorie Triple Bypass Burger. Their high calorie Butter Fat Shake is made with butter fat cream. Sodas high in sugar are also served. French Fries are cooked in lard. Customers weighing over 300 pounds, eat for free.
While this may seem extreme, and contentious, it isn’t much different than the eating habits of many Americans. In spite of medical warnings about overeating, and saturated fat, people continue to eat bacon, butter, rich meat, high fat cheese, ice cream, and shakes. The leading cause of death in America, is cardiovascular disease. Just like their counterparts who frequent the Heart Attack Grill, most Americans ingest too many calories.
The previous spokesperson for the restaurant, Blair River, died at 29. He was 6’8″, and weighed 575 pounds. The official cause of death was the flu.
Dr. Keith Ayoob, Director of the Nutrition Clinic a the Einstein School of medicine, had this to say about River’s death. “Obesity increases your risk for just about every condition, and it can make nearly every acute health problem worse.”
Sooner or later, faulty nutrition catches up with everyone. While risky eating habits are difficult to break, we are left with three choices: lifestyle modification, chronic disease, or death. Changing bad habits takes committment. Most Americans are not willing to do the work, because 68 percent of them are overweight.
