When a Yoga mat gets dirty, it won’t give you the traction you need to hold your standing poses. A dirty mat will also smell like a pair of old shoes. During Stick Pose, the stale aroma will not be pleasant.
There are two ways to clean your mat. If you don’t have alot of time, you can keep your mat clean with a spray bottle filled with a homemade antibacterial and antiviral solution, or purchase one already mixed.
HOME MADE YOGA CLEANER
1 Part Warm Water
3 Parts White Vinegar
Few Drops of an Antiseptic Oil: Tea Tree, Lavender, Eucalyptus, or Mint
Blend solution. Pour into a spray bottle. Spray solution on Yoga mat. Wipe mat with soft cloth, or paper towel.
READY-MADE YOGA MAT CLEANER
If you prefer to purchase a ready-made Yoga mat cleaner, there are many brands sold on Amazon. Click on the link to browse Yoga and Exercise Mat Cleaners.
WASHING MACHINE
If your mat gets alot of use, you might want a more thorough cleaning. You can wash your mat in a washing machine. Here’s how to do it.
- Use cold water only, and regular liquid detergent.
- After washing, place the mat on a drying rack, and let it air dry.

I’ve been looking everywhere for a good home-made cleaner for my yoga mats, I run a yoga class, most of my students bring their own mats in but I also have some on standby, which I clean daily, however I’m so sick of buying shop bought detergent. I can’t wait to try this out, thanks very much 🙂
