Guidelines to help you select a personal trainer

Personal trainers are exercise programming experts.  Some trainers have a general practise, some are specialists, and some have more than one specialty.  Some have college degrees, some have multiple certifications, some have both.

As far as pricing, there are trainers who offer packages, and those who don’t.  Some offer seasonal special pricing. In general, experience and education determine pricing.

Here are a few examples of personal trainer specialities: Seniors, Women, Boxers, Teenagers, Pregnant Women, Runners, Men, Golf, Core, Balance, Mind/Body, and Martial Arts.

If you like a trainer, and feel confident in him/her, try them out. Before you do, be certain you understand their pricing structure. Initially, if you don’t want a long-term contract, find a trainer who will work with you on a short trial basis, until you feel you found the right match.

  • Does the trainer offer a consultation before actual training begins, so you can discuss your needs?
  • Do you have rapport while speaking to a trainer?
  • Is the trainer patient?
  • Do you understand his/her explanations to your questions?
  • Are you willing to take instruction from the trainer?
  • Is the trainer a role model of health and fitness?
  • Do you like their appearance?  Do they appear professional?
  • Does the trainer seem knowledgeable?
  • If you’re on a tight budget, has the trainer explained how he/she will design your program, without going over your budget?
  • Does the trainer seem enthusiastic about his/her work?
  • Do you thoroughly understand a trainer’s pricing structure?
  • What are the trainer’s policies about your not showing up for your session, chronic lateness,  failure to pay for your session(s)? Continue reading…
