Lovable Lt. Columbo: Peter Falk’s Iconic TV Character and Legacy

The late actor Peter Falk (1927-2011) played one of the most beloved characters to appear on American television. Falk portrayed Lieutenant Columbo in the TV series Columbo from 1971 to 1978, winning four Grammy Awards. The show was reprised in 1983 and ran to 2003.

Columbo was a fictitious LAPD detective with a shabby and disheveled appearance, who wore a tan rumbled raincoat, brown suit and tie.

Falk was perfectly cast as the lovable, polite, unpretentious cop who loves his job and is unconcerned about clothing or the car he drives. His blue collar, cigar smoking underdog persona was a hit with TV viewers.

Reruns of the show are available today on You Tube , Amazon Prime Video and other streaming outlets.

Peter Falk passed away in 2011 at the age of 83 of Alzheimer’s.
